While time together is the most precious gift of all, it doesn’t hurt to have a fantastic drink together. Frank Sinatra had an indelible impact on men growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, shaping what it meant to be an elegant, sophisticated man. It’s only natural that brands would continue to be inspired by his grace and style.
Both Bulova and Jack Daniel's have enjoyed long-term relationships with Old Blue Eyes, and all three together create the perfect pairing for the ultimate Father’s Day gift. So, Watchonista recently took a trip to the Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and brought a couple of our favorite pieces from Bulova's Frank Sinatra collection, and got some great shots of a father and son reconnecting after a long year apart.
The Watches
Frank Sinatra and Bulova have an incredible history. Bulova sponsored Sinatra’s variety show, which was called Bulova Watch Time, and Sinatra wore Bulova watches for over six decades. Moreover, Bulova’s new Frank Sinatra collection is inspired by the timeless style and elegance of the Rat Pack and comes in four different models.
Two standouts include the “Young at Heart” and “Fly Me to the Moon” watches, inspired by two of his most iconic songs. The Young at Heart timepiece has a gold-tone stainless steel case, hour and minute hands, and hour markers. It also features a tonneau-shaped case and rich whiskey brown dial with a sunray finish.
Beyond the model’s name, there are several nods to Frank Sinatra on the watch. In honor of Sinatra’s impeccable style and panache, a golden fedora is etched into the crown and used as the 12 o’clock marker, plus his signature appears on the dial above the 6 o’clock marker, and the exhibition caseback and the inside of the leather strap both say: “Young at Heart.”
The Fly Me to the Moon model has a classic round stainless steel case and a vintage-inspired dial. The rich black dial is textured with a sunray pattern and is decorated with gold-tone hands and hour markers. It also has Sinatra’s signature on the dial and Fly Me to the Moon on the back and the strap.
Both watches are powered by the Miyota Caliber 8215 movement, which has a 42-hour power reserve and a date aperture at 3 o’clock. The Young at Heat model retails for $695, while the Fly Me to the Moon model retails for $750.
The Whiskey
Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select Special Edition Tennessee Whiskey makes the perfect gift for any Sinatra – or whiskey – fan. It is a unique whiskey created by Jack Daniel's in honor of the legendary crooner, who was one of the brand’s first famous fans. In 1955, he helped put the distillery on the map when he took to the stage with a glass of whiskey in hand and declared, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is Jack Daniel's, and it’s the nectar of the gods.”
The whiskey is ultra-smooth, thanks to Jack Daniel's meticulous craftsmanship. First, an unaged spirit is “mellowed” through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal. Jack Daniel's calls this mellowing process “the extra blessing” because it strips the harshness from the spirit and makes it extra smooth. After the whiskey has mellowed, a process that can take up to five days, it’s put into barrels that Jack Daniel's creates on-site at its cooperage. It’s exceptionally rare for a distillery to handcraft its own barrels, but it gives the distillers absolute control over the final product.
For the Sinatra Select whiskey, Master Distiller Chris Fletcher carefully selects each barrel himself. While barrel-aging is a crucial step in all whiskies, it’s especially important in this special blend. Jack Daniel's coopers carve deep grooves into the wood staves of these barrels. That increases both the amount and type of wood that the aging spirit is exposed to, giving it a deeper color, a more powerful character, and additional smokiness and vanilla flavors from the toasted oak.
The final whiskey is 90 proof and has a rich amber color that isn’t far off from the Young at Heart dial color. On the palate, it has vanilla, caramel, smoke, and spicy notes. It comes in a large, 1-liter bottle in a special gift box and is accompanied by the story of Frank Sinatra and Jack Daniel's. The Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select Special Edition Tennessee Whiskey retails for $185.
